Background

The Wake Weekly was founded in 1947 in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and covers Wake and Franklin counties. Bob Allen bought it in 1952 and ran it with his wife, Peggy, for nearly 50 years. Their son Todd Allen published it through Allen Publishing LLC from 2009 to 2019. In January 2019 he sold it to the Wilson Times Co., and it is now managed by Restoration NewsMedia, which also runs sister papers such as The Wake Forest Weekly, The Rolesville Weekly and The Franklin Weekly. The news staff is local; the opinion pages carry editorials, letters and columns. Many of those columns are syndicated or come from outside contributors, such as libertarian writer Thomas L. Knapp. Columns I found from 2026 include sharply critical pieces on Trump: one calls him a "Great Distractor" (March), one welcomes a Supreme Court ruling against his tariffs (March), one criticizes his aluminum tariff move (July), one questions his election-security rhetoric (August), and one by an election official warns about efforts to keep some Americans from voting (October 9). Knapp's column criticizes both major parties. I found no pro-administration columns in my search, but I did not review the whole section, so that may reflect search results rather than the full opinion page. I found no notable controversies or ownership scandals.
