The Wake Weekly
U.S. local/community — no clear national partisan lean
Background
The Wake Weekly was founded in 1947 in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Robert Allen bought the paper from his brother in 1952 and ran it with his wife Margaret for nearly 50 years; the couple became well known in state journalism circles, jointly inducted into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 2006, and Margaret Allen won the National Newspaper Association's Emma C. McKinney community-journalism award. From 2009 to 2019 the paper was published by Allen Publishing LLC, owned by the Allens' son Todd Allen. In March 2019, Todd Allen sold the Wake Weekly along with the Kingsdale Media marketing agency to The Wilson Times Co. Restoration NewsMedia, incorporated the following month as a joint venture between The Wilson Times and The Daily Record of Dunn, now manages the paper alongside several other North Carolina weeklies, including the Johnstonian News and the Butner-Creedmoor News. As a small-town weekly, its editorial focus stays local, and it has won state press association awards for general excellence; it is not positioned as a source of national political commentary.
