Background

The Journal was founded in 1889 by Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser, and became the main U.S. financial daily. The Bancroft family owned Dow Jones for generations until Rupert Murdoch's News Corp bought it in 2007 for about $5 billion. Its newsroom is separate from its opinion section, and the newsroom has won many Pulitzer Prizes. The editorial page has long advocated free markets, lower taxes, deregulation and free trade, and it has often been critical of Trump, including on tariffs. In 2025 the Journal reported on a 2003 birthday letter attributed to Trump and sent to Jeffrey Epstein. Trump then sued the paper, News Corp and Rupert Murdoch for $10 billion in defamation, and a federal judge dismissed the suit. Reporting says Trump has refiled it, and that talks aimed at resetting the relationship with the administration have taken place. Recently the editorial board has criticized Trump's tariffs, his attacks on the Federal Reserve and his midterm strategy, while it has supported tax cuts and deregulation.
