Background

The Washington Free Beacon was founded in February 2012 by Michael Goldfarb, Aaron Harison, and Matthew Continetti, and was initially organized under a conservative nonprofit called the Center for American Freedom, modeled loosely on the liberal Center for American Progress. In 2014 it converted to a for-profit company, with hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer serving as its primary financial backer. The outlet is rooted in the Republican Party's neoconservative wing and built its reputation on aggressive investigative reporting targeting Democratic politicians, progressive institutions, and what it frames as left-wing cultural excess. In a notable episode, the Free Beacon commissioned opposition research firm Fusion GPS from October 2015 to May 2016 to investigate multiple 2016 presidential candidates, including Donald Trump — work that predated, but was separate from, the later Steele Dossier funded by Democrats. Founding editor Matthew Continetti led the outlet until 2019, when former Politico White House correspondent Eliana Johnson became editor-in-chief. Under Johnson, the outlet continued to build influence through investigative pieces on higher education, media, and government that were frequently picked up by mainstream outlets and sometimes triggered federal investigations.
