Background

Waste Dive was launched as part of Industry Dive, a Washington, D.C.-based B2B digital media company co-founded in January 2012 by Sean Griffey, Ryan Willumson, and Eli Dickinson, all veterans of the B2B publisher FierceMarkets. Industry Dive built a portfolio of free, advertising-funded trade publications targeting professional audiences across more than two dozen industries, with waste management among its original verticals. Waste Dive covers solid waste, recycling, organics, landfills, and related environmental and regulatory topics, reaching more than 160,000 industry subscribers through newsletters and a mobile-friendly website. In July 2022, Informa PLC — a large U.K.-headquartered business-to-business media and events company — announced an agreement to acquire Industry Dive for an enterprise value of approximately $525 million, completing the deal in September 2022. Industry Dive was later folded into Informa TechTarget, a combined entity created when Informa merged its Informa Tech digital businesses with TechTarget. Waste Dive follows the Industry Dive editorial model: no paywall, a stated separation between editorial and advertising, and straightforward trade journalism covering regulatory developments, corporate transactions, technology, and market trends. In covering the Trump administration's second term, the publication has reported factually on EPA proposed budget cuts that would reduce recycling and waste program funding, changes to PFAS regulation, and the elimination of environmental justice monitoring tools, presenting these developments in terms of their operational and business implications for waste industry professionals rather than in an advocacy frame.
