Owned byOwned by Nexstar Media Group, which closed its roughly $6.2 billion acquisition of TEGNA Inc. in 2026 after FCC and Justice Department approval. A federal court injunction in a multistate antitrust suit currently bars Nexstar from integrating TEGNA's operations, so WCNC is still run separately. Nexstar also owns Charlotte's Fox affiliate WJZY and CW station WMYT.

Background

Channel 36 signed on July 9, 1967, as independent WCTU-TV, later renamed WRET-TV, and it was nearly shut down in the early 1970s. In 1978 NBC moved its Charlotte affiliation to the station in a surprise switch from WSOC-TV's market position, and it has stayed with NBC since. The Providence Journal Company bought it in 1988, and it was renamed WCNC-TV in 1989. Belo Corporation acquired it in 1996, and TEGNA took over the Belo-era stations after the 2013 split of Belo's holdings. Nexstar's purchase of TEGNA won FCC and DOJ approval in March 2026 and closed. The state attorneys general (13 as of April 2026) sued to block it, and in April 2026 a federal judge in California issued a preliminary injunction against integrating the companies, so the merger's long-term effect on WCNC is unsettled. Like most network-affiliated local stations, WCNC's coverage is mainstream and non-ideological. Critics of Nexstar and similar groups say consolidation can reduce local news diversity and allow centralized decisions on content, and Nexstar has been criticized for dealings with the administration while seeking approval. I did not find evidence that WCNC's own reporting has become partisan.
