WFMJ
U.S. center, local broadcast
Background
WFMJ-TV signed on March 8, 1953, founded by William F. Maag Jr., then publisher of the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper — the call letters are his initials. For most of its history, the station operated under the Vindicator Printing Company alongside the newspaper, giving it deep roots in the local print-and-broadcast media ecosystem of northeastern Ohio. The Vindicator, once the dominant daily in the region, shut down in August 2019 after the Maag family sold it to Ogden Newspapers; the family retained WFMJ. The station has been an NBC affiliate since its early years and serves Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties in Ohio as well as Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania. WFMJ promotes itself as 'the Valley's only locally owned TV station,' a distinction it leans on heavily in its branding. It airs more than 31 hours of local news per week and relies on the Associated Press and AFP for national and international content. No significant editorial controversies or major ownership disputes are on record; the station's output is characterized by straightforward local reporting with minimal ideological editorializing.
