Background
WFMY-TV signed on in September 1949, becoming the second television station in North Carolina and the first in the state to originate a live broadcast. It was founded by the Greensboro News Company, publishers of the Greensboro Daily News, and quickly established a CBS affiliation it has maintained ever since. Ownership changed several times over the following decades: Landmark Communications acquired the parent company in 1965, Harte-Hanks Communications took over in 1976, and Gannett Company purchased the station in 1988 for $155 million. In 2015, Gannett spun off its broadcast holdings into a separate publicly traded company called Tegna, which assumed ownership of WFMY. In March 2026, Nexstar Media Group completed a $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna, making WFMY part of the largest local television group in the United States; however, a federal preliminary injunction issued in April 2026—stemming from antitrust lawsuits by more than a dozen state attorneys general—blocked full operational integration, and Tegna has continued to run its stations largely independently in the interim. Throughout its history, WFMY has focused on serving the Piedmont Triad community with local news, and independent media monitors have consistently rated it low in bias and high in factual reporting.
