Background

WFMY-TV signed on September 22, 1949, making it the second commercial television station in North Carolina and one of the earliest in the Southeast; it produced the state's first live television broadcast on August 18, 1949. The station was originally owned by the Greensboro News Company, publisher of the Greensboro Daily News and Daily Record. Landmark Communications acquired the parent company in 1965, then Harte-Hanks Communications took over in 1976. The Gannett Company purchased WFMY in 1987, and when Gannett spun off its broadcast properties in 2015, WFMY became part of the newly formed Tegna Inc. Tegna operated the station as a local-news-oriented CBS affiliate, with WFMY branding itself 'WFMY News 2' and emphasizing community journalism. In August 2025, Nexstar Media Group announced a $6.2 billion deal to acquire Tegna; the FCC and DOJ approved it and the transaction closed in March 2026, making Nexstar the owner of roughly 265 stations covering about 80 percent of U.S. TV households. The merger drew criticism from public-interest groups who argued large-scale consolidation weakens local newsrooms. WFMY itself has not been the subject of notable editorial controversies; as a large-market-chain CBS affiliate its coverage has been broadly mainstream and locally focused.
