Background

WGHP signed on October 14, 1963, licensed to High Point, NC, originally as an ABC affiliate under Southern Broadcast Company. In September 1995, Fox began operating the station under a local marketing agreement and completed its purchase on January 17, 1996, making WGHP a Fox owned-and-operated station. The station served as a Fox O&O until Tribune Media acquired it as part of a large package of Local TV stations in December 2013. In December 2018, Nexstar Media Group announced it would acquire Tribune Media for approximately $6.4 billion; the deal closed in 2019, placing WGHP under Nexstar's ownership alongside more than 200 stations nationwide.
