WGNI-FM
U.S. non-political (commercial music radio)
Background
The WGNI call letters date to 1945, when they were used for an AM station owned by General Newspapers Inc., publisher of the Wilmington Post. The current 102.7 FM signal first went on air in 1971 under the call sign WAAV, and in 1981 Fayetteville-based Cape Fear Broadcasting acquired both WAAV and WGNI, eventually shifting the WGNI call letters and adult contemporary format to the FM frequency. Through subsequent industry consolidation the station came under the ownership of Cumulus Media, one of the largest U.S. radio broadcasters, which also owns Wilmington sister stations WMNX, WWQQ-FM and WKXS-FM. WGNI's programming is built around adult contemporary music, syndicated features from networks like Compass Media Networks and Westwood One, and local community/promotional events (such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital radiothons), rather than news or political reporting. Its HD2 subchannel carries a simulcast of WAAV, Cumulus's local news/talk station, which is the outlet in the cluster more likely to carry political content. As a music-format commercial station, WGNI has no substantive editorial track record on national politics or the Trump administration; any political framing associated with the Cumulus Wilmington cluster is attributable to WAAV rather than WGNI itself.
