WGNI
U.S. commercial entertainment radio — no discernible political orientation
Background
The WGNI call letters trace back to 1340 AM in Wilmington, which signed on Christmas Eve 1945 under General Newspapers Inc., publisher of the Wilmington Post. The FM frequency (102.7) launched in 1971 under the call sign WAAV before going through several identity changes. Cumulus Media acquired the station in a transaction approved in spring 2001 and rebranded it as WGNI, marketing it as 'Wilmington's home for Today's Hits & Yesterday's Favorites.' Cumulus — one of the largest U.S. radio groups with roughly 400 stations across 84 markets — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 and emerged in 2018 with its debt converted to equity held largely by former creditors. WGNI operates with affiliations to Compass Media Networks and Westwood One for syndicated content, including programs such as the Bob & Sheri Show and John Tesh. The station's HD2 subchannel simulcasts WAAV, a separate Cumulus-owned news/talk station, giving the cluster a news presence without WGNI itself producing news content. As an adult contemporary music station, WGNI has no editorial page, political commentary, or consistent news coverage that would indicate any orientation toward or against any administration.
