WHKY
U.S. right
Background
WHKY signed on the air June 10, 1940, after Ed Long broke ground for the station in 1939; it is one of the oldest radio stations in the U.S. still owned and operated by its founding family, broadcasting on 1290 AM (50,000 watts) and simulcasting on 102.3 FM. For decades the station was co-owned with a sister television outlet, WHKY-TV (channel 14), until that station was sold off around 2023 and eventually became a religious broadcaster. WHKY has long carried nationally syndicated conservative talk programming, having been a charter affiliate of the Rush Limbaugh Show and currently carrying Hannity, Levin, and Fox News/Fox Sports Radio content alongside locally produced talk shows and dedicated local news, weather and high school sports coverage. It is not part of a large conservative broadcast chain like Salem Media or Truth Broadcasting (a distinct, unrelated North Carolina company); it remains a small, independently held local operation. Its own local news desk generally sticks to community-level reporting, while its talk-show lineup and syndicated content give the station's overall output a right-leaning tilt typical of local AM news/talk stations nationwide.
