Background

WKML first signed on December 1, 1960, as WTSB-FM in Lumberton, North Carolina, simulcasting sister station WTSB with limited 6,500-watt coverage of the local area. The call letters changed to WGSS in July 1979. In 1985, the station adopted its current WKML call sign and switched to a country music format, then boosted its transmitter to 100,000 watts to reach the larger Fayetteville market. The station brands itself 'The Big 95-7' and has positioned itself as Fayetteville's flagship country station for more than four decades. Its signature annual event, Stars & Guitars, held at the Crown Coliseum, has featured major country acts including Morgan Wallen, Sam Hunt, and Carly Pearce. The station is currently owned by Beasley Media Group, part of Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc., which was founded in 1961 by George G. Beasley and is now led by his daughter, Caroline Beasley.
