Background

WPTF began in the 1920s in Raleigh. Its call letters stand for "We Protect The Family," the slogan of its early owner, Durham Life Insurance Company. In 1991 Curtis Media Group, founded by Don Curtis in 1968 and renamed from Great American Media, bought Durham Life's radio division. That deal included WPTF, WQDR and the Southern Farm Network.
