WPTF traces its origins to 1924, when it was licensed as WFBQ to the Wynne Radio Company in downtown Raleigh. In 1927 the Durham Life Insurance Company purchased the station, changed its call letters to WPTF—an acronym for the company's slogan 'We Protect The Family'—and owned it for nearly 65 years. In the early 1980s, Durham Life entered a merger arrangement with Donald Curtis and his Curtis Radio Group. When Durham Life exited broadcasting in 1991, Curtis led a buyout of its stations and formed the Curtis Media Group, making WPTF the flagship of what grew into North Carolina's largest privately owned radio network, now comprising 61 AM and FM signals statewide. In 2012, WPTF split its format, moving most talk programming to a sister station (WPTK 850 AM) and rebranding itself as the all-news 'NewsRadio 680 WPTF.' In 2024, the addition of a 92.9 FM translator expanded its reach, and the station rebranded as 'FM 92.9 / AM 680 WPTF.' Local newscasts focus on Triangle-area public affairs and North Carolina politics. The bulk of its weekday daytime hours are filled by nationally syndicated Fox News Radio programs—including The Brian Kilmeade Show, Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla, and Red Eye Radio—all of which tilt conservative and have been broadly favorable toward the Trump administration.
