Background

WUNC traces its origins to a student FM station at UNC-Chapel Hill that signed on November 3, 1952, but went off the air around 1970 due to equipment failures and lack of funding. It relaunched in its current form on April 3, 1976, immediately becoming North Carolina's second NPR member station. The station expanded its footprint over the following decades, adding WUND-FM in Columbia, NC, in 1999 and several repeater transmitters to reach rural parts of the state.
