Background

Yahoo Finance launched on January 19, 1997, as part of Yahoo's broader strategy to build an internet portal by aggregating third-party content, including financial data and wire-service news from partners such as Reuters. Yahoo itself was founded in 1995 by Jerry Yang and David Filo at Stanford University and grew into one of the dominant web properties of the late 1990s dot-com boom. After the dot-com bust, Yahoo struggled for years to find a sustainable business model, cycling through multiple CEOs and failed acquisition attempts. In 2017, Verizon Communications purchased Yahoo's core internet properties for approximately $4.5 billion and merged them with AOL under an umbrella called 'Oath,' later rebranded as Verizon Media Group; the combination never achieved the advertising-market gains Verizon had projected, leading to a $4.6 billion write-down. In May 2021, Verizon agreed to sell 90% of Verizon Media — including Yahoo Finance — to funds managed by Apollo Global Management for roughly $5 billion; the deal closed in September 2021 and the company was again renamed Yahoo. Under Apollo's ownership, Yahoo has concentrated investment on its highest-traffic properties, with Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Mail, and Yahoo News serving as the core products. Media bias analysts at AllSides rated Yahoo Finance 'Center' in an April 2026 editorial review, noting that its articles — drawn heavily from wire services — showed minimal partisan lean, though the aggregated sources it features (Bloomberg, Reuters, AP) are themselves generally rated center to center-left.
