Yahoo Finance / Bloomberg
U.S. center to center-left, financial-establishment orientation
Background
Yahoo Finance grew out of Yahoo, the internet portal founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo at Stanford University in 1994 and incorporated in 1995. Yahoo Finance as a distinct destination emerged in the late 1990s, offering stock quotes, financial data, and aggregated news. After Verizon acquired Yahoo's core internet assets for roughly $4.5 billion in 2017, the properties were sold to Apollo Global Management for approximately $5 billion in 2021. Yahoo Finance has since grown into the highest-traffic financial news site in the United States, with about 150 million monthly active users as of 2024. Bloomberg was founded as a financial data company in 1981 by Michael Bloomberg (following his departure from Salomon Brothers) and partners; its Bloomberg Terminal became the dominant professional tool for real-time financial data worldwide. Bloomberg News was launched in 1990 by Michael Bloomberg and founding editor Matthew Winkler to serve terminal subscribers and has since expanded into a global newsroom with more than 2,700 journalists in over 120 countries. Bloomberg faced notable criticism for editorial independence in 2019 when, during Michael Bloomberg's Democratic presidential campaign, the outlet announced it would not conduct investigative reporting on him or his rivals—a policy widely criticized as a conflict of interest. Major media bias trackers (AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check, Ad Fontes) rate Bloomberg in the center-to-lean-left range; Yahoo Finance is rated broadly center. In its coverage of Trump's second term, Bloomberg has published detailed critical analysis of the administration's tariff policies, climate rollbacks, and regulatory actions, while maintaining data-driven financial reporting.
