Background

Yahoo Finance launched on January 19, 1997, as part of Yahoo's broader web portal strategy, and was ranked the number one financial source on the web by PC Meter in its first year. Yahoo itself was co-founded in 1994 by Stanford graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo and went public in April 1996. Yahoo Finance grew into the top-ranked U.S. financial news and research website, a position it has maintained since at least 2008 according to Comscore data, and it had approximately 150 million monthly active users as of April 2024. After Yahoo's prolonged decline in the 2000s and 2010s — marked by missed acquisition opportunities and failed turnaround attempts — Verizon acquired Yahoo's core web properties in 2017 and folded them into a division eventually called Verizon Media. In September 2021, Apollo Global Management purchased 90% of Yahoo from Verizon for approximately $5 billion, with Verizon retaining a 10% stake; Yahoo now operates as a standalone company under Apollo's control.
