Background

Yahoo News launched in August 1996 as a simple aggregator of headlines from outlets like the Associated Press, Reuters, and CNN. Starting around 2009–2011 it expanded into original journalism, opening a Washington bureau, hiring name-brand political reporters, and joining the White House press corps in 2012. It has passed through several corporate owners: Yahoo itself was bought by Verizon in 2017 and folded into the "Verizon Media" division alongside AOL and HuffPost, before Verizon sold the whole unit to Apollo Global Management in 2021 for about $5 billion, spinning it back out as standalone Yahoo Inc. Today the site remains primarily an aggregation hub — pulling in wire copy and partner articles — layered with its own politics, entertainment, and finance desks (Yahoo Finance is a major property). Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides both rate it left-of-center, driven partly by which outside outlets it aggregates and partly by original story framing, though AllSides has noted it has drifted somewhat toward the center in recent years and is not considered a fringe or highly partisan source. It has no ties to a specific political party or advocacy group; its slant stems from newsroom culture and sourcing choices rather than ownership mandate, since Apollo, its private equity owner, does not publicly direct editorial content.
