Zero Hedge
U.S. right-libertarian / anti-establishment, contrarian
Background
Zero Hedge was founded in January 2009 by Daniel Ivandjiiski, a Bulgarian-born former investment banker and trader. FINRA charged him in 2008 over an insider trade and barred him from securities trading. The domain was registered to ABC Media Ltd, a Bulgarian company managed by his father, Krassimir Ivandjiiski, and that company remains the legal owner. It began as a bearish, skeptical finance blog covering the financial crisis, central banks and market structure, and it drew a large readership. Over time it added geopolitics, health and culture-war content, much of it republished from other writers and some of it conspiratorial. Critics have documented it repeating Russian-state-aligned narratives and spreading misinformation, and some have questioned who writes under the Durden byline. In February 2020 Twitter permanently suspended it after it published an unsubstantiated claim that a Wuhan scientist created the coronavirus and posted the scientist's personal details. In June 2020 Google banned it from its advertising platform over reader comments. Its 2026 coverage includes pieces critical of Trump's attacks on the Fed and of administration influence on the stock market, alongside commentary such as "it's getting harder and harder to bet against Trump." It is best characterized as an anti-establishment outlet with a long-running distrust of central banks, governments and mainstream media, which does not align consistently with either party.
