ZeroHedge
U.S. far-right libertarian
Background
ZeroHedge launched in January 2009, founded by Daniel Ivandjiiski, a Bulgarian-born former securities trader who had been barred from the securities industry by FINRA in 2008 for a minor insider-trading violation. Ivandjiiski writes primarily under the pseudonym 'Tyler Durden,' a reference to the film Fight Club. The site quickly attracted a large audience with contrarian, bearish financial analysis during the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Ownership is held through ABC Media Ltd., a Bulgarian company whose sole proprietor is Krassimir Ivandjiiski, Daniel's father. A 2016 Bloomberg investigation identified three core contributors at the time: Daniel Ivandjiiski, credit-derivatives strategist Tim Backshall, and writer Colin Lokey. Over time, the site expanded well beyond financial commentary into political content with a libertarian and increasingly far-right orientation. A 2018 RAND Institute study found the site 'frequently echoes the Kremlin line,' and in February 2022 U.S. intelligence officials publicly accused ZeroHedge of amplifying Kremlin propaganda ahead of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, citing articles that originated with Russian intelligence-linked outlets; ZeroHedge denied any knowing connection to Russian intelligence. In April 2025 the site was granted White House press corps credentials under the Trump administration, and in May 2025 a ZeroHedge reporter used his first question at a White House briefing to raise a debunked political conspiracy theory.
