Pick the second and it looks like a major event. The same thunderstorm produced both headlines.

That gap matters here because this was not an isolated storm. It was the third time in August that severe weather forced a ground stop at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, after Aug. 11 and Aug. 21[11][12]. The Aug. 21 storm was bigger, knocking out power to more than 52,000 customers[10]. A pattern is forming, and how big any one storm "was" depends entirely on which number gets picked.

What the Storm Actually Did

Severe thunderstorms moved through the Charlotte metro during the Friday evening commute on Aug. 28, 2026.
