Africanews
pan-African, left-center
Background
Africanews grew out of a 2013 initiative by Euronews CEO Michael Peters to create an independent, Africa-focused news channel that was not editorially tied to Western or ideological agendas. Euronews announced the project in 2014 and signed a hosting agreement with Télé Congo, and the channel launched on January 4, 2016, broadcasting from Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, with more than 60 staff and 70 correspondents across the continent. In July 2020, operations relocated to Lyon, France, where Euronews is headquartered. Euronews itself changed hands in 2022 when Alpac Capital, a Portuguese investment fund, completed the purchase of the 88% stake previously held by Naguib Sawiris's Media Globe Networks for approximately €170 million; a subsequent investigation by journalists found that at least one-third of Alpac's acquisition funds were linked to entities connected to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, prompting a French journalists' union to call for a parliamentary inquiry. Africanews operates under the same editorial charter as Euronews, claiming full editorial independence. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center in story selection — attributing this to emphasis on climate action, gender equity, and opposition movements — and 'Mostly Factual' in accuracy, noting occasional sourcing weaknesses such as missing links to primary evidence. The channel covers African politics, business, and humanitarian affairs and tends to report U.S. policy toward Africa in a factual, impact-oriented manner without strong partisan framing.
