Caixin
Chinese business-oriented, semi-independent within CCP constraints
Background
Caixin Media was founded in November 2009 by Hu Shuli, a prominent Chinese journalist who resigned from Caijing Magazine — a publication she had built into one of China's leading financial outlets — along with roughly 90 percent of Caijing's editorial staff. Hu's initial backing of 40 million yuan came from Zhejiang Daily Press Group, a state-owned publisher, which later sold its stake to China Media Capital (CMC) in 2013; Tencent and Ant Group subsequently became investors, and Hu has maintained editorial control. The outlet earned a reputation as one of China's most aggressive investigative financial newsrooms, reporting on corruption, pollution, and sensitive economic policy in ways that frequently strained its relationship with Party authorities — and in 2011 it received Stanford's Shorenstein Journalism Award for independent media leadership. In 2016, Chinese regulators banned other websites from reposting Caixin content for two months, sharply cutting its audience reach, in what observers read as retaliation for unfavorable coverage. In October 2021, the Cyberspace Administration of China removed Caixin from its official 'whitelist' of more than 1,300 approved news sources that other internet platforms may republish, effectively severing it from major portals like Sina. Despite these sanctions, Caixin continues to publish and is widely read by China's business and financial community; its English-language site, Caixin Global, targets international readers. The outlet occupies an unusual niche: more willing than state media to cover sensitive economic stories, but ultimately constrained by the same political environment and partly reliant on investors with government ties.
