Background

The group was founded in 1992 as the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy and later renamed. It grew from a small legal organization into an international one, working in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Nancy Northup has led it for about two decades, and its annual budget grew from about $6 million to more than $65 million. It is best known for litigating abortion cases. These include Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt (2016) and June Medical Services v. Russo (2020). In 2022 it represented Jackson Women's Health Organization in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, in which the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Since Dobbs, it has challenged state abortion bans and pursued records requests and policy analysis. Its website carries news releases, case pages, research reports and trackers such as 'U.S. Repro Watch'. These materials are written to advance its cause, and critics, including anti-abortion groups, view it as a partisan advocate. Since Trump's second term began in January 2025, it has issued statements and a report on his first year back, which it said further weakened abortion access. It has also sued the administration over records on abortion pill safety review and violence against abortion providers, over the destruction of foreign-aid contraceptives, and over Medicaid defunding.
