Background

The Center for Reproductive Rights was founded in 1992 by attorney Janet Benshoof under the name Center for Reproductive Law and Policy; it later adopted its current name. Headquartered in New York City, it operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and focuses on establishing reproductive rights as enforceable legal rights through litigation and legal advocacy in U.S. and international courts. Over more than three decades it has brought landmark cases on abortion access, contraception, maternal health, and forced sterilization across five continents. Its funding base skews toward large liberal-leaning foundations — including the MacArthur Foundation, the Open Society Foundations, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — alongside individual donors. The organization is openly and unambiguously pro-abortion-rights; it does not claim neutrality on the underlying policy questions. Since January 2025, it has filed numerous suits against the Trump administration challenging its review of the abortion pill mifepristone, alleged destruction of federally funded contraceptive supplies, Medicaid defunding of reproductive health clinics, and selective non-enforcement of the FACE Act. It is one of the primary institutional vehicles for legal opposition to abortion and contraception restrictions in the United States.
