CGTN launched in December 2016, rebranding and expanding CCTV's international channels (previously CCTV-9/CCTV News) into a multilingual global network with English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian services. In 2018, CCTV, China National Radio, and China Radio International were merged into China Media Group, placed under the direct oversight of the CCP's Central Publicity Department, tightening party control over CGTN's editorial line.
