Background

El Cronista was founded by Martín Giménez Antonio and first published as El Cronista Comercial on November 1, 1908. It was the first Argentine newspaper to specialize in economic and financial news, and it was renamed El Cronista in 1989. Ownership has changed several times. Spanish publisher Grupo Recoletos was among its earlier owners, and Francisco de Narváez, a businessman and former legislator, owned it from 2006. In 2021 Grupo América bought it for a reported US$6 million. The paper has long served executives, investors and policymakers, and its editorial line is generally pro-market and favors fiscal discipline. It has not been linked to a single party. Under Grupo América, its political coverage sits alongside the group's TV and radio outlets, which critics say lean toward business-friendly and often government-skeptical or pro-market positions depending on the period. In 2026 its pieces on Milei and Trump include both neutral reporting on trade talks, the China relationship and sanctions, and critical analysis, such as a story on how a Milei–Trump meeting turned from a hoped-for success into a setback. The outlet reports on the Trump administration mostly as it affects Argentine markets, trade and politics, rather than as a U.S. domestic political commentator.
