Background

EUobserver was founded in 2000 by Lisbeth Kirk, a Danish journalist, through a Brussels-based nonprofit entity called EUobserver.com ASBL, making it one of the first English-language outlets devoted entirely to EU affairs. Kirk served as both editor-in-chief and business head until 2015, when Eric Maurice took over editorial leadership; Koert Debeuf followed as editor-in-chief in 2019, and Elena Sánchez Nicolás later assumed that role. A 2008 poll of Brussels-based journalists ranked EUobserver the second most influential outlet covering EU affairs, behind only the Financial Times. The publication built its reputation on independent watchdog coverage of EU institutions, democratic backsliding, and foreign policy. In February 2026, EUobserver announced it was joining Denník N — a journalist-owned Slovak publisher founded in 2014 after its founders left a Slovak daily that had been taken over by an oligarch — which provided financial backing and subscription technology while pledging to preserve full editorial independence. Media bias trackers rate EUobserver as left-center or lean-left, with high factual reliability; it promotes broadly liberal positions on democracy, rule of law, and multilateralism. Coverage since January 2025 has treated the Trump administration's second term with consistent skepticism, framing U.S. tariff threats, NATO posturing, and pressure on European governments as destabilizing to the transatlantic order.
