Background

The Myrtle Beach News was founded as a weekly in 1935 by C. L. Phillips and J. Clarence Macklen. In 1961 it was sold to Mark Garner, publisher of the rival Myrtle Beach Sun (started in 1950), who merged the two into The Sun News. It became a daily by 1977 as the Grand Strand grew into a major tourist and retirement area. The State Record Company bought it in 1973, Knight Ridder acquired that company in 1986, and McClatchy bought Knight Ridder in 2006. McClatchy filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and was bought by Chatham Asset Management for about $312 million, which ended its time as a publicly traded, family-influenced company. Under McClatchy and Chatham the paper has downsized and cut print frequency, and a local news site has reported it dropping an AP news feed. Its editorial perspective is generally moderate and community-oriented, in a state whose politics lean Republican, and it has no strong record of partisan campaigning. Because the name is ambiguous, readers should note that this profile covers The Sun News, the successor to the original Myrtle Beach News. It does not cover the separate local site MyrtleBeachSC News.
