Politico Europe
Pan-European, centrist establishment (EU-policy insider focus; owned by a German publisher)
Background
Politico launched in the U.S. in 2007. Politico Europe launched in Brussels in April 2015 as a joint venture with Axel Springer, with the first editor Matthew Kaminski. It grew by covering EU institutions with morning newsletters like Brussels Playbook, the paid Politico Pro service, and the annual Politico 28 ranking of influential Europeans. In August 2021 Axel Springer agreed to buy all of Politico in a deal valued at over $1 billion. Since then Politico Europe has sat inside the wider Axel Springer group, and Goli Sheikholeslami has led the global Politico business. Axel Springer's corporate principles include support for Israel's right to exist and a pro-free-market, transatlantic outlook. Staff in Politico's U.S. newsroom have publicly disputed how those rules apply to editorial work, and a 2024 arbitration ruling went against management over AI tools used in the newsroom. Critics from both left and right have accused the outlet of insider, access-driven coverage and of heavy reliance on anonymous sources. In 2026 the Trump White House barred Politico, CNN and MS NOW reporters, and a federal judge ruled against the ban. Politico also faced a threat of further access limits and an Air Force One restriction after stories the White House disputed, and it issued a correction on a story about Susie Wiles. Overall, Politico Europe's perspective is that of a mainstream, centrist, pro-EU-institution policy publication with a transatlantic outlook, not a partisan outlet.
