Background

RedState launched in 2004 as a community blog for conservative activists, and Erick Erickson became its editor-in-chief. In late 2006 it was sold to Eagle Publishing, effective January 2007. In 2014 Salem Media bought Eagle's assets, including Regnery Publishing, Human Events and RedState. Erickson left in December 2015 to focus on his radio career. In its early years the site was known for movement-conservative and Tea Party-era commentary, and it included some voices critical of Donald Trump. In April 2018 a former editor said Salem carried out a 'mass firing' of staffers who were critical of Trump, and the site moved to a strongly pro-Trump line. Today it publishes mostly opinion and commentary from conservative writers, often with partisan framing and sharp rhetoric aimed at Democrats and mainstream media. Media-bias raters classify it as right-leaning, and readers should treat it as advocacy and opinion rather than neutral reporting. In 2026 Salem announced a buyout by WaterStone, which would put the site under a faith-based donor-advised fund. I did not find any reporting that this changed RedState's editorial direction.
