U.S. state-funded international broadcaster
RFE/RL is a U.S. government-funded international broadcaster, not a private outlet, reporting mainly to audiences in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia in their own languages. Its funding comes entirely from Congress through USAGM, which the Trump administration briefly tried to cut off in March 2025 before restoring it after RFE/RL sued; the 2026 appropriations bill kept its funding intact. Its coverage of the Trump administration itself is limited since its core mission targets authoritarian regimes abroad, but on press-freedom and funding disputes involving itself, it has reported critically on the administration's attempts to defund it.
