Background

The Spectrum News brand grew out of regional cable news channels begun by Time Warner Cable, starting with NY1 in New York City on September 8, 1992. Many of the other channels were launched in the 1990s and 2000s as local 24-hour news channels, and Time Warner Cable's channels in several states ran under local names such as News 14 Carolina. Charter Communications bought Time Warner Cable in 2016. It rebranded the channels under its Spectrum name and expanded the network, which now covers New York, California, Texas, the Carolinas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Hawaii and other states. The channels focus on local government, weather, traffic, sports and community stories, and they produce some original political and public-affairs programming. Because Charter is a cable company with mergers and regulatory approvals to seek, including the Cox deal, there is a possible conflict of interest in how it covers its own parent. In 2026 Spectrum News ran its own coverage of the Charter-Cox approval and completion, as seen on its site. Media bias raters generally describe its coverage as straight news with limited editorial slant, though I could not fully verify rater ratings here. Its perspective is best described as institutional and locally focused rather than ideological.
