The Spectrum News network traces its origins to September 8, 1992, when Time Warner Cable launched NY1, a 24-hour local cable news channel serving New York City, conceived by TWC executive Richard Aurelio as a way to differentiate cable subscriptions from other TV options. Time Warner Cable expanded the model to other U.S. markets over the following two decades, building a portfolio of regional cable news channels. In May 2016, Charter Communications completed its $65 billion acquisition of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, folding Spectrum News under Charter's ownership.
