Background

Mike Masnick launched Techdirt in 1997 as a newsletter summarizing technology industry news while studying at Cornell's Graduate School of Management. It evolved into a full editorial blog under Floor64, Inc., a company Masnick also founded, which has served as Techdirt's corporate parent ever since. Over nearly three decades, Techdirt built a reputation for detailed, opinion-driven analysis of intellectual property law, net neutrality, government surveillance, and platform regulation. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center in orientation but high in factual accuracy. The site faced a serious legal threat in the late 2010s when Shiva Ayyadurai — who claims to have invented email — sued Masnick for defamation; Techdirt survived largely through a reader-funded legal defense campaign before the suit was dropped. In March 2025, Masnick published an editorial declaring that Techdirt had become, 'whether we like it or not,' a democracy blog, arguing that the Trump administration's second-term actions made coverage of democratic backsliding inseparable from tech journalism. Since then, the site has run a steady stream of articles critical of Trump administration moves on broadband funding, AI policy, civil liberties, and election administration.
