TODAY
U.S. mainstream, center-left tilt in news segments; soft-news and lifestyle focus
Background
Today launched on NBC in January 1952 and is one of the longest-running and most-watched morning shows in the United States. It was a pioneer of the morning-news format, and well-known hosts have included Dave Garroway, Jane Pauley, Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. It is produced by NBC News, and its website, Today.com, carries lifestyle, entertainment and news content. NBC has been owned by General Electric, then Comcast (which took control in 2011 and fully acquired NBCUniversal in 2013). In January 2026 Comcast spun off MSNBC (renamed MS NOW) and CNBC into Versant, though NBC News, NBC and Today stayed with NBCUniversal. Its editorial record includes the 2017 dismissal of Matt Lauer after misconduct allegations, which led to a wider examination of workplace conduct at NBC News. Critics on the right often call NBC News liberal-leaning, while critics on the left say morning programs like Today go easy on powerful figures. Because so much of its airtime goes to soft news, its political slant is generally milder than that of opinion-driven cable channels. The Trump White House has been in conflict with parts of the press in 2026, including banning some outlets, but I found no source that clearly places Today on either side of that dispute.
