Background

Founded in 1998 as the online publication of the International Committee of the Fourth International, WSWS grew out of decades of Trotskyist political journalism dating to the ICFI's predecessor organizations. It is closely tied to the Socialist Equality Party and its sister parties worldwide, and its editorial board is chaired by David North, a longtime leader of the American Trotskyist movement. The site publishes daily news and analysis from an explicitly Marxist, anti-capitalist viewpoint, covering labor struggles, war, and international politics, and has built a reputation for detailed coverage of strikes and the labor movement often underreported elsewhere. It has also been a sharp critic of trade unions, which it regards as bureaucratic and class-collaborationist, as well as of the Democratic Party, which it views as no less committed to capitalism and war than Republicans. Media watchdog groups classify it as having a strong left/far-left bias with a mixed factual-reporting record due to its heavy editorializing. It operates independently of any government or corporate ownership, relying on volunteer contributors and reader donations, and maintains that its journalism serves the interests of the international working class rather than any national government.
